Sin Dee Interview
Sin Dee is a beautiful alternative fetish model from New York City. She was Troma.com’s Tromette of the month for August, and she’s been featured in ads for Manic Panic, among many other things.
For starters, tell us a bit about yourself. What kind of things are
you into? What keeps you going?
Ok, well, I’m an alternative/fetish/pin-up model. I’m usually the girl who’s willing to go out on a limb for a great picture. I adore the Pin-Up style and find Fetish/Bondage very interesting (if done correctly). I go to a Fashion Business school for Marketing and I have a degree in Merchandising with a Minor in Fashion Publishing, so fashion is a huge part of my life. I believe in being an individual and I think fashion is one of the greatest ways to express yourself.
I’ve been playing flute for about 14 years. I’ve just started to play for a band called The Violets and I should be heading into the studio with them this September. I’m really hyped about that since the last real gig I had was playing in the back-up band for MTV’s ‘Say What? Karaoke’ TV show back in ’03. I guess you can say this is a huge step up in my musical career.
Besides my passion for Fashion, Modeling and Music, I am really into Horror Movies and all types of Creepy Collectibles. I collect tons of creepy looking dolls, Horror Memorabilia, and I am one of the Horror Convention geeks who will wait on line to meet Linda Blaire among other stars. I have tons of autographed pictures from people who’ve stared in Horror Movies. I really love watching really cheesy B-Horror Films whenever I get a chance.
What keeps me going? The want to be successful in all I do.
How did you get into fetish modeling? Was it something that you always
wanted to do, or did it happen more by chance? How long have you been
modeling now?
When I was younger my brother had been taking photography classes and decided I’d be his main model. So, I guess you can say I grew up in front of the Camera. After he moved out I wasn’t modeling for anyone anymore and began to focus on my Music. I went to a performing arts High School for Music Performance and spent all my time playing my flute. I would attend a casting call here and there throughout High School, but I was always turned down because of my height or ended up almost getting scammed so I was never successful. Then, about two years ago a friend of mine had done a photo shoot with a photographer, mentioned me to him and somehow a shoot was scheduled. After that one shoot it all just developed from there. Very quickly. So I guess it was by chance, but now I keep it going with a lot of hard work.
Who are your favorite photographers that you’ve worked with so far?
Absolutely, the very first two photographers I’ve worked for (Richard Scalzo and Classically Absurd Photography) have become great friends of mine. They not only supported me through various projects and continued to work with me, but they have got some of the best personalities. If it weren’t for them, I don’t think I’d be as successful as I am now.
Have you ever experienced any shoots that were particularly horrible?
I’ve never had any horrible experiences, but a lot of uncomfortable ones. Not that I felt uncomfortable, but more like… well, here’s an example… One photographer (who I won’t name), requested I do a shoot in my underwear in a Basement, in the winter, with no heat, and the spot I had to sit in was covered with tons and tons of spiders and spider webs. That sort of thing can really make a girl stressed out, but I just keep in mind that it’s all in the name of art.
How do you feel about the fetish/ alternative “scene” in general?
Well, I’m never one to really categorize anyone, let alone myself. I mean, people ask me how I would categorize myself. Heck, I don’t know. I’m some weird meshing of a punk/goth/raver/ metal/pin-up chick. So I can’t say I know too much about any scene. But from what I know about being “alternative” or in the “fetish” scene, since so many refer to me (including myself) as a fetish/alternative model, I would say it’s one of the most interesting “scenes” to be a part of. The alternative scene is definitely full of more individuals than any scene really. And by individuals I mean people who want to be themselves and want the world to see that they are an individual. They are the people who don’t follow a crowd and who don’t give a shit what anyone thinks of them. Sadly enough, other scenes, like the “preppy kids” or “emo kids”, and even some “punks” are really just following a fad and trying to fit in.
As for Fetish it’s a fabulous sex driven style and lifestyle that only the open minded can really be accepting of. Probably amongst the more controversial scenes, especially with the S&M/Bondage aspects of it (which most of my Fetish photos include). I personally find Fetishes and Bondage exciting and interesting. It’s incredible to think that fetishes and bondages have existed for centuries in all sorts of forms and in all types of cultures.
Do you have any advice for beginning fetish/ alternative models?
Never hesitate. If you see an opportunity, take it. Never hesitate to tell people that you model and that you want to model for them. I remember being little and someone once telling me “Work doesn’t come to you; you need to go and ask for work”. I’ve always had that in the back of my head with everything I do. It’s the only way to be successful and achieve the things you want. If you want it badly, then do something about it. Don’t just sit around waiting for work to come to you.
I know a lot of models get some creepy stalkers and weird-ass emails. Have you experienced anything you’d like to share that was particularly creepy/ funny/ weird?
Funny enough, ever since I’ve started modeling I haven’t had any stalkers. Sure I get way too many friend requests on MySpace from weirdos looking for a good time, but not any stalkers. I did however, have a stalker back when I was in Junior High School. He would put letters under my door telling me he wanted to take me away, kill everyone off, and create the new perfect race with me. It was really creepy. When he finally sent a letter with a map drawn showing my house to his house, well let’s just say… he’s been deported. He was wanted for a lot more than just harassing teen girls like myself. So, that has got to be the worst stalker experience to date.
If you could meet one person, living or dead, who would that be?
Wow, I’d have to choose a few. I don’t know if that’s fair, but I would have to say Vincent Price, Marilyn Monroe, and Betty Page. Vincent Price so I can bare his child, Marilyn Monroe so she can teach me all about being fabulous, and Betty Page so she can give me tips on Modeling.
What are some of your favorite bands?
If you know me well, you know I’m probably the biggest Misfits fan ever. If I hadn’t already met Danzig, Jerry Only, and Doyle, I would have mentioned them in the previous question. Meeting Danzig was probably the greatest day of my life. I’ve been listening to them since I was about 10 or something and I’ve never stopped. I always go to the shows when they’re in NYC, every autograph signing, I’ve bought every doll, every shirt, and I own every CD… even some Vinyls. There’s something about their oldies inspired Horror Punk styling that just revs me up for a good time.
Besides the Misfits, I dig Marilyn Manson, Rob Zombie, Killswitch Engage, Nine Inch Nails, Orgy, Puya, White Stripes, and Avenged Sevenfold, among many many others. Too many to keep listing really.
What are some of your favorite movies?
Like I mentioned before, I have a thing for horror movies, my favorite being the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre. It has set the standard for all circa 70’s-serial killer-hitch hiker-twisted family-movie to date. I like horror movies that make sense; that seem as if they really could happen. I could just as likely take a road trip with some friends and end up getting chased around by a large demented killer. That’s scarier than any Killer with super powers, because it could really happen.
Aside from Horror movies I’d have to say my all time favorite movie is Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. As much as that may cliché to say now-a days, but I’ve loved that movie since I was little. I know the movie word for word, as well as the songs. There’s no character more disturbing and mysterious as Willy Wonka. It’s just a fabulous movie over all.
How do you feel about birth control?
I am absolutely for it. There’s no need to put yourself in a situation you’re not ready for. If you’re going to have sex and know down right that you can’t provide for a child the way you should (with a home, money, food, time, etc.) then you should take every precaution to prevent that situation from occurring. I know I do.
What do you think about downloading, MP3s and the RIAA?
I don’t think anyone should really be wronged for downloading a few songs for free. Now downloading full CDs at a time can be a bit too much. Heck, I don’t want to incriminate myself or anything, but I don’t see why you can’t just take one song you like from your friends’ playlist instead of buying a whole CD for that one particular song, when you might not even like the entire CD anyway. I mean, it’s not as if you’re really ripping the artists off. They get paid with royalties, merchandise sales, concert tickets and the millions of CDs they do sell, in addition to their huge record contract/deals. If you really think about it, free music is more exposure for the artist, leading to probable new fans, which will lead to more customers in the merchandise, concert tickets, and CD sales. Let’s say you listen to one song, then download onto your i-pod, really like it, then that’ll lead you to go out and buy the CD that you might not had considered buying in the first place. I say no harm, but I can’t say I do it either.
What is your opinion on the current state of American society?
In my opinion, it’s actually a sad one. We lack complete individuality, everyone is fighting to be better than everyone else; it’s just completely filled with hate. There’s war, more and more prejudice, and huge generation gaps. Our youth are growing up too fast, our old are being kept alive simply for the living’s selfish well being, and everyone fights over money. If you ask me, we don’t need terrorists to really cause terror in our country. If you give us enough time, we will create chaos anyway, which is terrifying enough. I can’t see things getting any better. I can only keep my fingers crossed for a miracle.
If you knew the world was ending in a week, what would you do?
I would take one day to spend with each person or group of people in my life doing the things we love to do. For example, I would spend one day with my mother drinking coffee, shopping, and gossiping, then one day with my friends partying and getting drunk off our asses, etc. Basically do the things I love to do now, with the people I love. It’s the only way to live life really.
What is the meaning of life?
I’ll be damned if I know. That’s one of those questions no one really has an answer to. But I do know that life isn’t something that should be wasted. I don’t think anyone should really just sit around not doing anything with themselves and the life they have. You were given life for a reason, whatever reason you may believe that’s up to you. I honestly have no clue, but don’t just sit around wasting it. Change lives, live your life to the fullest, make a difference, be happy. Otherwise, you don’t really deserve to be alive, now do you?
If you could have one superpower, what would it be?
I’d like to say Immortality, but I’m not sure if that would be considered a super power. It would be fabulous to live forever, have time to travel the world, and experience everything that happens over time. To see the world, people, and society evolve. I could do what I like and never worry about time running out. … But, if that isn’t a legitimate Super Power… then maybe reading people’s minds would be cool. I’m a voyeur (non-sexual) in the sense that I love to see how people live their live in comparison to how I live mine. They’re customs, traditions, what they fear and love… so reading minds would be so interesting. It would be like reading living books.
What are some things you hate about other people?
I hate people who follow the herd. I’m a strong believe in being yourself. I hate people who concern themselves with fitting in, wearing what’s “cool”, doing what’s “cool”, and acting like everyone else. I don’t like people who build their personality based on bits and pieces of the people around them. Be yourself, do your own thing and don’t care what anyone else thinks. If they don’t like it, then you shouldn’t be wasting your time with that person anyway.
What are some things you hate about yourself?
I’m probably the biggest procrastinator in the world. I’m completely driven and focused, but when it comes down to it, I will leave everything off for the last minute. It’s a miracle I get the grades I do in school, since I honestly do wait until the night before to write my papers. Heck, I kept putting answering these questions off. It’s a terrible habit.
Zombies or Cannibals?
Although they’re both flesh eaters, I’d have to say, Zombies are way cooler than Cannibals. At least the Zombie has an excuse for eating people; they’re un-dead, unconscious, and aren’t really aware of the hunger. Cannibals, on the other hand are unscrupulous humans… unless you’re stranded on a mountain and need to eat your sister for survival, or something, … otherwise, please, just eat pork or chicken or something.
Bruce Campbell or Christian Bale?
Bruce Campbell = Evil Dead, so of course I’m going to have to say Bruce Campbell, although I’m a huge Batman fan.
The Toxic Advenger or Texas Chainsaw?
Now, I should say “Toxic Avenger!” since I was Troma.com’s Tromette of the month, but … I’m sorry to say… I have to side with Leatherface. Like I said before, the Texas Chainsaw Massacre is by far the best Horror Move to date, and Leatherface is much scarier, more bad-ass, and cooler looking that Toxie. (Again, I’m so sorry Troma! Λ ). Except for the re-make of Texas Chainsaw Massacre where Leatherface is some gigantic stumbling fool… what’s up with that?
Okay, that’s all I wanted to ask. Anything else you’d like to say?
I’d like to thank Royce and www.drowningodium.com for being interested enough in me to take your time to interview me. I think your site is kick ass! Thanks to everyone who’s reading this and keep your eyes peeled for the unveiling of my website this Halloween, October 31, 2006.
