Joy Division- The documentary Review by Royce Icon
Joy Division- The documentary
I had no idea that this thing even existed. I was actually randomly going through the catalog of pay per view movies on my tv one night when I noticed the words “Joy Division” in big letters. Being as they’re one of my favorite bands, that was pretty much all it took for me to hit the confirm button and add the extra 2.99 to my cable bill.
Like I said, I really had no idea what to expect, so I was very happy to find a very well put together, seemingly accurate account of the history of the band, told from the mouths of the surviving members themselves and others who were actually there, as opposed to third party sources.
There is a lot of cool footage of the band performing here, from rare BBC clips to live stuff, and it’s very informative. Thankfully, the focus was put entirely on the band itself, and not on Ian Curtis offing himself, which isn’t mentioned until it was chronologically relevant towards the end, being as him hanging himself was the end of the band as it was.
All in all, this is a very interesting documentary, and I can’t imagine a better one being made. Anyone who digs Joy Division would likely dig this. Recommended for sure.
