Bikini Kill- Reject All American Review by Royce Icon
In the past I’ve had somewhat of a love/ hate relationship with Bikini Kill. I’ve always admired their aesthetics to a degree, and the fact that they’ve inspired so many women to make music is definitely a plus for them in this mono-gender art scene world of ours. But I also was always kind of freaked out by what seemed
like excessive hard line preaching on their part.
Anyway, I saw a copy of “Reject All American” for super cheap so I got it. And I gotta say, I’m fucking blown away. Listening to this album really made me feel like a jackass, as I had only heard random mp3’s and whatnot before hand and I thought I basically knew what they sounded like. I was totally wrong. Bikini Kill were a total force, and they were definitely best represented in the album format, as most bands are.
Musically this is somewhat standard fast punk stuff with some slower cleaner numbers, but it’s what’s behind the sounds that makes it amazing. Every song here drips with total passion and sincerity, and it’s really inspiring. I don’t agree with everything that’s said on this record, but that’s not the point. The point is that Bikini Kill meant what they fucking said. And that alone is something that deserves respect. I just feel lame for noticing it all a decade after they broke up……
